T

he lecture explores the motivation for the presence or absence of vignettes, labels and titles in texts on the example of several case studies from the Saite -Persian tombs of Menekhibnekau and Iufaa at Abusir. It becomes apparent that far from being motivated purely by the availability of space, time or means for the completion of the tomb, the use or disuse of vignettes is often governed by much more complex factors, such as the context of the spell, the topic perceived as most important for the given context, etc. The information contained in the vignettes and their labels can thus provide further cues to reading and interpreting the associated texts, as well as the to the choices made in the decoration of the burial  chambers and the motivations behind them.
